Subject Area- Social Emotional Development.
Preschool Standards-
PK.SEL.1.: Regulates responses to needs, feelings and events.
PK.SEL Indicators: b. Appropriately names types of emotions (e.g. happy, excited, sad) and associates them with different words and behaviors.
Objective- Students will be able to name emotions and associate them with different facial expressions and body language.
Materials- Book “Jack and Mommy Escape the Berman Shepherd” written by Denise Fallon. Illustrated by Ryan Birmingham.
Supplies- Colored pencils. Superhero activity coloring page. Emotion flashcards (make your own facial expression cards from google images or buy from Amazon). Jack and Mommy book
Connection-
I will gather the students. I will talk about facial expressions and body language, modeling both. We will discuss why it is important to understand how others are feeling.
We will discuss how facial expressions and body language help us find out a person’s emotions.
We will play a game with emotion flashcards. I will hold up one emotion flashcard at a time and have the students act out the emotion on the card, using facial expressions and body language.
We will discuss how authors use words and illustrations to show and tell about their characters emotions.
Finally, I will tell the students that they will listen to a story about a Mommy and son who had a scary adventure and learn about how they feel throughout the book by using their body language and facial expressions.
Procedures/Active Engagement- I will read Jack and Mommy Escape the Berman Shepherd. I will stop at appropriate times and ask my students to predict how Jack, Mommy, itty bitty doggie and the Berman Shepherd are feeling. Use turn and talk during this time and listen in to partnerships to check for understanding. I will ask about facial expressions, body language and emotions during and after the story.
Enrichment- The students will be told to sit at their desks. Each student will receive a superhero coloring activity to highlight how different facial expressions tell information about our emotions.
Check for Understanding/Assessment- I will use a checklist to evaluate which students: Were able to name emotions and associate them with different facial expressions and body language.
*Lesson is easily modified for other grade levels.
